Independent research conducted with 890 respondents at the Scarborough foreshore over the past weekend has demonstrated an overwhelming 63% support for the proposed 3 Oceans development on the corner of West Coast Hwy and Scarborough Beach Rd.
The sample, which included local residents, day trippers as well as overseas and interstate visitors were randomly selected over the two day period to be interviewed about the proposal.
Dyno Zhang, Managing Director of 3 Oceans stated that once the research was broken down according to local residents, Stirling residents and the remainder of Perth, the data still showed overwhelming support.
“56% of Scarborough residents supported our proposal compared to 38% who opposed it. In addition 62% of Stirling Council residents supported the project compared to 30% who opposed it,” Mr Zhang said.
“The research also demonstrated that 64% of Perth residents (outside the City of Stirling) also supported the proposal compared to 27% who opposed it.
“56% of the respondents who supported the proposal believed that the area needed to be refurbished with a further 44% stating it would bring in more tourists, be good for business (31.5%) as well as create jobs (32%).”
Samantha Reece, Managing Director of WA Apartment Advocacy stated that 3 Oceans had taken the bold step to ascertain the views of the silent majority.
“As with any project dealing with height in the Perth area, we only hear from the vocal minority and hence 3 Oceans literally took to the streets to see what the unbiased opinion was of the masses,” Ms Reece said.
“There is a level of resistance in Perth to height but as this research demonstrates, this is not the view of the majority and hence it was essential that this research was undertaken to demonstrate that the 3 Oceans proposal in fact will add value to the area and beyond.
“WAAA’s own mass research with apartment livers in January 2017 also demonstrated that 49% would select a coastal location next time they purchased an apartment.
“With 110kms of coast in Perth alone there are only a few locations that offer apartment living, and as such developments at locations such as Scarborough are in line with the future needs of many Perth residents.”
The 3 Oceans proposal includes 324 apartments, 148 room 4 star hotel, 2509sqm convention centre, 3502sqm retail space, public observation deck, 750 car bays (including 264 public bays), WA market hall and experience centre. It is anticipated that the construction phase will employ 2200 workers.
